Sinking

By Jake White

( This is literally the best way for me to deal with depression)

When it grabs you by the leg,
and pulls you even deeper,
the sinking sensation
is more real than you feared.

Everything is dark.
Breathing is choked.
Judgment is obliterated.
Focus is lost.

When it wraps around your neck,
and squeezes the life out,
hope diminishes,
and you come to a crossroads.

You are strangled.
Your thoughts are your hindrance.
Your mind is your enemy.
You have disappeared.

There are three different paths.
Each it's own outcome.
Easy, medium, difficult.
Regret, turmoil, respect.

Mirrors don't work.
Blinded by the darkness.
Friends are nonexistent.
Alone, always alone.

Which would you choose?
The first vest carries you to the surface.
But why would you risk so much,
on the utter unknown.

Where has everyone gone?
You pushed them away.
Why?
To save them from the hurt.

The second vest lets you sink.
It's made of nothing but rock.
Deeper and deeper,
into the never-ending abyss.

They've finally showed up to help.
It was too late.
Both sides get hurt.
Only you are the blame.

The last vest requires strength.
Requires all that you have.
Even if it's not enough,
you should find yourself swimming up.

You persevered.
It took more than just you.
You swam up and discovered your savior.
The lifeguard that had been chasing you,
the whole time
