When I was young
Four people had called me beautiful
But they couldn't count
Family
didn't count.
When I was young
No one thought highly of themselves
So I didn't either.
When I was young
We went to a dance
Where the music was too loud
The tickets too expensive
And the night far too short.
He told me then.
And every day for a month obsessively
Until he exhausted the flattery
But not before it stuck.
When I was young
Five people had called me beautiful
But they couldn't count

Only I could.
